In a 4-wire design, electrodes are located on both layers (two on each), so wear on the top layer can reduce accuracy over time. In a 5-wire design, all four sensing electrodes are placed on the bottom layer, while the top layer acts only as a voltage probe. This makes 5-wire technology significantly more durable and precise even after thousands of touches, as wear on the top layer does not affect calibration.
