In places where flammable gases, dusts, or vapors are present, even a small spark can pose a serious danger. That’s why devices with ATEX certification were created – equipment designed to operate safely in environments with an increased risk of explosion. ATEX (from French ATmosphères EXplosibles) is a European directive that defines safety standards for equipment used in so-called EX zones.
What does the ATEX certificate mean?
The ATEX certificate confirms that a given device – such as a tablet, data collector, phone, or industrial computer – has been designed and tested for resistance to sparking, overheating, or electrostatic discharge. This means that its construction, casing, and internal components do not create any source of ignition. ATEX-certified equipment is therefore safe to use in places where fuel vapors, industrial gases, solvents, wood dust, or flour dust may occur.
Depending on the application, ATEX devices are divided into different zones (Zone 0, 1, 2 for gases and Zone 20, 21, 22 for dusts) – the lower the number, the higher the level of protection. This allows for precise selection of equipment suited to a specific working environment.
Devices with ATEX certification stand out not only for their high level of safety but also for their solid construction and resistance to external factors. Their casings are sealed, usually rated IP65 or IP67, resistant to shocks, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Touchscreens are designed for use with work gloves, and ports are protected against dust and liquid ingress.
Modern ATEX tablets and data collectors can offer the same functionality as standard mobile devices – Android or Windows systems, Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, Bluetooth, barcode readers, GPS modules, and even integration with MES, ERP, or SCADA systems. This enables safe data collection, process monitoring, and real-time information exchange even in the most demanding conditions.
Where are ATEX-certified devices used?
ATEX devices are used wherever there is a risk of explosive atmospheres. These include, above all:
In such locations, equipment without proper protection could pose a hazard – ATEX devices eliminate this risk while maintaining full functionality required for fieldwork.
The greatest advantage of ATEX devices is their reliability in daily operation and full compliance with strict safety standards. This equipment is built for demanding environments – combining durability with functionality, allowing comfortable and efficient work even under tough conditions. Thanks to powerful components, high sealing levels, and resistance to damage, ATEX tablets and data collectors perform excellently in the field, in production facilities, and within industrial automation systems.
This is more than just protected equipment – it is a work tool that supports processes, improves communication, and boosts the efficiency of entire teams. Explore our range of certified ATEX equipment and choose a solution tailored to your work environment.
